0:07.0	Today we finished our 36 book of the Bible and it took us seven chapters but we
0:17.6	finally met Ezra the man who this book was named after he's a scribe
0:21.2	descended from Aaron the High Priest.
0:23.0	He lived in Babylon turned Persia until he left to return to Jerusalem during the reign of King Artes
0:28.6	Xerxes of Persia. Remember King A from the Book of Esther? His full name was Ahashwares, but he was also known as Xerxes,
0:35.2	and Arta Xerxes is the King who came after Xerxes.
0:39.1	So this is all happening after Esther's husband dies.
0:42.3	But a quick sidebar, this new king is almost
0:44.8	certainly not Esther's son. Most scholars don't attribute any children to Esther.
0:49.3	The events starting in Chapter 7 are taking place roughly 60 years after the first six chapters of this book.
0:55.3	Today opens with a letter to Ezra from King Arteserxes of Persia.
0:58.8	He's sending Ezra and a bunch of other Jews in Persia back to Jerusalem.
1:03.2	But he's not sending them back dismissively.
1:05.4	He's sending back anyone who wants to go,
1:07.8	and he's sending them with massive blessings and provisions.
1:11.1	He says he'll take care of basically everything Ezra needs.
1:14.0	He also tells Ezra to appoint magistrates and judges who will teach and enact the laws of
1:18.6	Yahweh. And as if all this weren't enough, the king tells him that the temple gets a pass on paying taxes.
1:25.2	This is a really exciting commissioning for Ezra because he's a Torah scholar and he's going to
1:29.6	get to teach the scriptures to all the exiles in Jerusalem.
1:33.0	And by most accounts, this will be Ezra's first time in Jerusalem.
