0:13.2	The books of Nehemiah and Ezra used to be one long book, chronicling the return of
0:17.3	the exiles after the Babylonian captivity.
0:19.9	In Ezra, we met the first two rounds of leadership, Zerubabel and Joshua, and then we met
0:24.4	young Ezra.
0:25.6	Today we meet another leader who comes along during the time of Ezra, Nehemiah.
0:29.8	He is an Israelite official who works for the Persian government.
0:33.4	One thing we haven't dealt with so far is why there are so many Israelites still in
0:37.2	Persia after God commanded them to return to Jerusalem.
0:40.4	If they're Yahweh-theering Jews, why did they disobey God's orders?
0:44.5	Some scholars say people like Ezra, Nehemiah, and even Mordecai probably had no choice
0:49.0	in the matter, because they were servants of the Persian government and could only do
0:52.4	what was permitted.
0:54.1	If that's true, perhaps that's one reason why it was so important to have the King's
0:57.8	approval and support in returning to Israel.
1:00.6	Nehemiah has an inside track for getting the King's support, because he isn't a prophet
1:04.6	or a priest by trade, he's a personal assistant to the King.
1:08.2	In addition to that, he's a man of prayer.
1:10.9	There are 12 prayers recorded in the 13 chapters of this book.
1:14.6	He also frequently quotes or references scripture, which shows us that he knows God's word.
1:20.3	When we open today, he's got a family member in town from Jerusalem, and he asks how things
