0:00.0	Hey Bible readers, I'm Tara Lee Cobble and I'm your host for The Bible Recap.
0:07.0	Today we start our 10th book of the Bible and this book contains some of the
0:16.4	most beloved stories in the whole Old Testament. To backtrack a bit on how we got here Israel started out as just Abraham. God promised him offspring and
0:25.3	land. God gave him the offspring little by little, but his descendants really multiplied
0:30.4	during the 400 years they were enslaved in Egypt.
0:33.0	God used Moses to lead them out of slavery
0:35.8	and followed that with 40 years of testing in the wilderness
0:38.2	to train their hearts to know that he is the one true God.
0:41.0	Then God brought them into the land he promised Abraham all those years ago.
0:44.8	They spread out in that land, but it was so nice not to be in slavery or in the
0:49.4	wilderness that this new life of luxury and ease made them forget God. They did whatever they wanted.
0:55.6	God raised up judges as military leaders to drive out the enemies who were leading them astray,
1:00.1	but this didn't deal with the problem of their hearts leading them astray.
1:04.0	They did whatever they wanted and things grew continually worse in the promised land.
1:08.0	The Israelites were sure their problem would be solved if only they had a king.
1:12.0	And that's where we find ourselves today.
1:14.9	It's approximately 10.50 BC and we open with a couple, Elkhana and Hannah.
1:20.4	They're Levites, the tribe of priests living in Ephraim, the tribe who love to fight, and
1:25.8	Hannah is Baron.
1:27.4	Elkhana has a second wife who is not Baron, but the text seems to indicate that he loves
1:31.4	Hannah more. That probably makes
1:33.4	Panina the second wife jealous. Every year when they go to Shiloh and offer sacrifices
