Summary

On January 27, 1973, 20-year-old Dawn Magyar was abducted from a shopping center parking lot in Owosso, Michigan. She had just finished grocery shopping and was loading her purchases into her borrowed truck when she was forcibly taken. Her husband reported her missing that evening. The next day, police found the truck in the parking lot with her groceries still inside and her keys scattered on the ground—clear signs of a violent abduction.Despite a massive search involving 4,000 local volunteers, Dawn was not found alive. On March 4, 1973, two young brothers discovered her body in a wooded area in Saginaw County. She had been raped and shot three times with a .22 caliber gun. The case went cold for decades. But in 2001, new DNA technology enabled police to identify the killer: Jerald Leroy Wingeart. He was arrested, tried, and convicted of Dawn's murder—28 years after her body was found. This episode tells the story of Dawn Magyar, the investigation that spanned nearly three decades, and the DNA breakthrough that finally brought her killer to justice. Hey guys, and welcome to the Moms and Mysteries podcast.

0:36.2

A true crime podcast featuring myself, Mandy, and my dear friend Melissa.

0:37.1

Hi, Melissa. Hi, Mandy. How are you?

0:39.2

I am doing well. Happy to be not in the new year, but almost in the new year. But actually when

0:47.9

this comes out, we will be in the new year. So hope 2025 is doing great for everyone. Yeah.

1:00.5

It's been great for both of us. I say with zero trepidation, it's going to be a good year. I'm very excited.

1:06.8

Yes, Melissa, how was your Christmas? I hope it was very relaxing and uneventful.

1:44.7

It was very relaxing and uneventful. I got some kind of upper respiratory infection like right before and I was feeling horrific. But by Christmas, I was on antibiotics and feeling better. I still sound kind of rough, but I feel so much better. But we had my sister and her family came over and we ended up doing, have you ever seen blind karaoke when you, some, I've seen people do it on TikTok, of course, but it's like where you sit in front of the TV and you have karaoke going on. So they can't hear the words. You pick a song for somebody. So say you're sitting there, I have a song playing behind you.

1:52.1

You can hear the music. You can't see the words. Okay. And you're singing. And it's amazing how little words you know of your favorite songs. It's, it is embarrassing. It's humbling. Also,

1:59.3

no one can sing nearly as good as they think they can,

2:02.3

you know, in the car with the radio. So it was a lot of fun. It ended up being my niece doing like a

2:09.7

solo karaoke version of Wicked songs, which was so fun. Oh, that's so cute. It was a lot of fun.

2:15.5

Yeah. What about you guys? We had a pretty low-key Christmas,

2:19.4

actually very low-key. I don't know if I even told, I think I kind of told you that we were doing this,

2:24.2

but like didn't really say it full out. But we went with like a no wrapped gifts Christmas this year.

2:30.5

First time in my entire life, I have literally had zero wrapped presents under my tree

2:36.1

on Christmas morning. I was so nervous about how that was going to go. We talked to the kids ahead

2:41.0

of time about it and decided to do things for the holiday season that maybe weren't just giving

2:47.3

each other things. So nobody got a wrapped present.
