Hi everybody. Welcome to Shift, a podcast about mobility. I'm Pete Bigelow, your

host and reporter to Automotive News. Walking around my neighborhood here in suburban Southeast Michigan the past year or so,

noticed an interesting trend.

There's at least a half dozen houses with pickup trucks parked in the driveway,

and they're parked there because they don't fit in the garage.

These aren't small ramshackle garages.

These are part of houses built within the past 10, 15, 20 years.

And every few months, there's another new pickup in a driveway,

too big to fit in its garage.

It's been a firsthand illustration of a trend

I've read about and written about. Americans have supersized their

vehicles. We've collectively stopped buying cars instead favoring pickup trucks and

SUVs that keep getting bigger.

That has a lot of consequences on land use, on efforts to combat climate change,

and on rising traffic death numbers.
