So I would love to get your perspective as the president of the International Rescue Committee, what's happening on the

U.S. southern border? We're calling it a crisis here from your perspective, having your bird's eye view of crises like this

Where does this fit in?

So I think there's two things that it's really important for people to understand.

First of all, at the border people from

mainly El Salvador Guatemala and Honduras are exercising their right to claim

asylum in the US. They're not quote unquote illegal. It's a

right under international law. The US is a signatory through the 1967 protocol

to the UN Convention on Refugees to give people the right to claim asylum if they feel that

they are not safe at home.

And that's the first thing that's going on.

There's then a whole set of policy responses that I'm sure we're going to
