David Lipsius, president and CEO of Yoga Alliance, sits down with J to talk about the issues facing the organization and his new leadership role. They discuss David’s history and credentials, his study and training in yoga, and what he hopes to do at the YA. The conversation tackles many of the misconceptions regarding YA, problems with the standards, a lack of transparency in the past, what is going to change going forward, and how we might start an honest dialogue to raise the value and social impact of the yoga profession.

Okay, hello, welcome, whoever you are old and new listeners.

0:17.0

This is Yoga Talks podcast.

0:19.7

My name is Jay Brown. Thank you so much for tuning in today.

0:24.9

For those of you who are returning, I'm not going to give a full report of how I'm doing today, as I often like to do in an intro to these podcasts.

0:36.7

I decided not to do that for two reasons.

0:39.6

One, kind of a big time guest today, David Lipsius from the Yoga Alliance is here.

0:45.9

And usually that means there's going to be a bunch of people who've not listened to the podcast before who are tuning in.

0:57.5

and emails I get about how they wanted to hear the interview and they wish that I would

1:01.9

have shut up in the intro. So I'm making a choice to preemptively avoid that. But also,

1:48.0

the other talks that I've been sharing with you of late. For one very important reason, which is

1:54.0

that in this instance, I felt this pressure on me and maybe I was just putting it on myself but anytime I feel like I'm

2:03.6

supposed to be like a journalist like I'm supposed to be reporting on something I start to feel

2:10.1

really uncomfortable I'm not trained as a journalist I don't enter into these talks with that

2:16.6

kind of mindset.

2:18.5

Like last week I talked with Michelle Ryan,

2:21.3

and I remember talking with her.
