David Green is the founder and CEO of Hobby Lobby.

He grew his company from a $600 mom and pop shop to an $8 billion company that gives away 50% of its profits.

And he learned his success strategies, not from business gurus, but from the pages of Scripture.

David, thanks so much for joining us on Takeaways.

Hey, we're honored to be here.

Well, we are so interested in your leadership strategies.

And we're going to talk about your book,

Leadership Not By the Book, in just a little while.

But can you just share with us a little bit?

What was it like starting a business out of your garage and then

growing it into more than 900 stores across the nation? I mean, how would you describe that kind of

success? Well, it's over a long period of time. This year is our 50th year. So we started in

1972, borrowing $600 from the bank and And our kids, we made frames in our

garage, is how we started, our first business. And from that profits from those frames that we

saw, we opened up our first store, which was 600 square feet. But my two boys glued frames together,

and we paid them seven cents a piece to put these frames together.

My wife worked the first five years with no pay. So that's kind of how we got started with very, very little.

Wow. Wow. And now you have been in business 50 years.

50 years this year. Celebrating 50 years of success. and from $600 borrowed to now the size of Hobby Lobby

Lobby is truly amazing.

Well, God has been really good to us.

We got great people.
