Welcome to the politics guys. I'm Michael Barronowski, a political scientist at Northern Kentucky University.

My co-host this week, as always, is Cleveland Area Attorney and sometime Republican strategist, Jay Carson.

Our guest today is political journalist and policy expert David Frum.

I've been a fan of his work for over 20 years, and so it's a real treat to be talking to

him today. Mr. From has had a long and distinguished career in political journalism and policy

analysis. Organizations he's worked with include the Wall Street Journal, the Manhattan

Institute for Policy Research, the Weekly Standard, and National Public Radio. He served as a speechwriter

for President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2002,

and is currently a senior editor at The Atlantic and chairman of the UK think tank policy

exchange.

He's also the author of eight books.

I first encountered your work back in 1994 when your book Dead Right came out.

And as I recall, it was a pretty big deal in Republican circles because in it you argued that the conservative movement had lost its way.

I'm wondering, how did you come to that conclusion?

The book was a look back at the Reagan years, and I look forward at the Republican Congress that was about to take power.

And the argument of the book was that Reagan had achieved a great deal, but on his, especially

foreign policy, but his central domestic agenda was not working, that Republicans had not been able to get control of the growth of the state.

That was the thing Reagan promised Republicans hadn't been able to do it.

And in 1994, I observed and predicted that Republicans were going to respond to this in one of three main ways.
