I always hesitate to make a certain year the pivotal one, but probably it looms in the consciousness of many people.

And because of what was happening worldwide, in places like Paris and Berlin, it has a certain ring to it, even though I think in the

United States for the kind of destruction that you see, it's not until after 68.

This is your host, Scott Bertram, and that's Daryl Hart, distinguished associate professor

of history at Hillsdale College.

We talk at length with him today about a course

he's teaching here on Hillsdale's campus, 1968 Year of Global Revolution. Dr. Hart,

thanks for joining us. Hi, Scott, thanks. Can you make an argument? Do you think that 1968 is the

most perhaps consequential year of the 20th century? When I titled the course, I was thinking that 68 was a big year, and it was.

R.F.K., Robert F. Kennedy's assassination, Martin Luther King, Jr., that's out of sequence,

the riots in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention.

But as I've gone into more material in the class, that's a pivotal year for the left,

and the left begins to break apart there.

Students for Democratic Society have been sort of chugging along and partly responsible for some of those protests

in Chicago.

But then out of that emerges the weather underground and the left wing side of SDS, which is a very

disturbing side of the American left.

And part of what made me want to think about this

is parallels I see between the kinds of protests

in the late 60s, early 70s,

and what's been going on in America,
