I'm Mick Garrus, and this is Postmortem.

The world of cinematic horror has its own class system.

The major studios partnering with companies like Blum House and Ghost House

have to appeal to the broadest possible audience

and have made the franchise film the center of their universe.

That's not to say it's a bad thing,

just something that sands the edges off the transgressive stories

that are the lifeblood of horror movies.

It is the world of the independent film

from which most of the original ideas and terror tales are birthed.

The stakes and the overhead are not nearly as high for companies like A24 and XYZ

as they are for the corporate conglomerates,

and a film that grosses a couple million dollars at the box office

can be considered a big success.
