Today we’re going to talk about the dangers and benefits of erythritol.
What is erythritol?
Erythritol is a sugar alcohol. It’s an alternative sweetener, and it’s 60-70% as sweet as sugar. It has less than 25% of 1 calorie per gram. Sugar has 4 calories per gram. Erythritol has .24 calories per gram. It has 95% less calories than sugar.
Erythritol gets absorbed in the small intestine, it gets in the blood, but it gets excreted by the kidney unchanged. The microbes don’t like to eat it. There aren’t many negative side effects of erythritol. It has zero impact on insulin—it doesn’t affect the blood sugars.
*As long as it’s non-GMO, I think erythritol is a great alternative sweetener.
The dangers of erythritol in high doses (greater than 50 grams):
1. Gas
2. Bloating
3. Stomach noise
4. A laxative effect

| 0:50.0 | a rethritol? It's a sugar alcohol. It has nothing to do with alcohol. You're not going to get drunk by |
| 0:55.9 | consuming arrethritol. Basically, it's an alternative sweetener, and it's 60 to 70% as sweet as sugar. |
| 1:05.8 | So it's not exactly as sweet as sugar. It's a little less. And it does have a kind of a cooling effect when you consume it. |
| 1:13.6 | As far as the calories go, it has less than 25% of one calorie per gram. Like sugar has four |
| 1:22.0 | calories per gram, protein has four calories per gram, fat has nine calories per gram. Heretrol has 0.24 calories. |
| 1:31.5 | So it's barely a fourth of one calorie per gram. Very insignificant. So in a thumbnail sketch, |
| 1:39.6 | it's 95% less calories than sugar. It gets absorbed in the small intestine, okay, it gets in the blood, |
| 1:47.1 | but it gets excreted by the kidney unchanged. So the microbes don't like to eat it, |
| 1:53.5 | so you really don't have many negative effects with erythrotol. It has zero effect on insulin. |
| 1:59.4 | It's zero on the glycemic index. It does not affect your blood sugars. |
| 2:03.9 | So even though it's made from sugar, using a certain friendly yeast to extract this sugar alcohol, |
| 2:11.0 | as long as it's non-GMO, I think it's a really good alternative sweetener. What are the dangers at high doses greater than 50 |
| 2:19.4 | grams, which I don't know anyone consuming that much in one sitting, you may get some gas, |
| 2:26.2 | bloating, stomach noise, and it may have a laxative effect. But other than that, there's actually |
