R. C. Sprold often would say that any given text of the scripture only has one

interpretation, but limitless application. There are many Christians today who will, perhaps in

the setting of a Bible study, will get together in a home and they'll read a chapter of

scripture together, and then they'll

begin to discuss its meaning. And if there are 10 people in the Bible study, by the conclusion,

you'll have 10 different meanings. If there are 15 people, 15 different meanings. What does it

mean to you, one might ask? What does this text mean to you? And the answer,

rhetorically, should be, it doesn't matter. Who cares? Doesn't matter what it means to you. It

matters what it means to God. God has determined the meaning of his word. God says a certain thing and God intends to convey

a certain message by what he has said. The meaning is not up to subjective or pluralistic interpretations.

That said, the application is multifaceted.

So one text, one doctrine, has one meaning, what God means by it.

The actual meaning, the objective truth, the absolute truth.

But then that truth can be applied in multiple arenas.
