Good morning. In the news this morning, Apple updated its software for iPhones to address a critical vulnerability that independent researchers say has been exploited by notorious surveillance software to spy on a Saudi activist.

Researchers from the University of Toronto Citizen Lab said the software exploit has been in use since February and has been used to deploy spyware made by Israeli firm NSO group

that has allegedly been used to surveil journalists and human rights activists in multiple

countries. The urgent update that Apple released Monday plugs a hole in the iMessage software

that allows hackers to infiltrate a user's phone without them even clicking any links.

That's why that icon popped up asking me to rate the Saudi spyware.

I'm looking at my account right now, and it's not telling me that I have to do it,

but there is a software update, even though I have automatic updates on.

So, well, probably update it.

It might be kind of function to check in on the spy stuff.

So they're saying that it's not a threat to the overwhelming majority of users,

but still they're encouraging everyone to update their mobile devices for protection.

Right.

Apple credited the citizen lab researchers for finding the vulnerability in a statement.

The NSL group did not address the

allegations, only saying that the group will continue to provide intelligence and law enforcement

agencies around the world with life-saving technologies to fight terror and crime. In a lawsuit

filed in 2019, Facebook accused NSL group of being complicit in a hack of 1,400 mobile devices using the WhatsApp.
