In the news this morning, Los Angeles County reached a high level of COVID-19 infections on Thursday, according to public health officials, meaning a mask mandate could be imposed in two weeks as the highly transmittable Omocrine subvariants, BA4 and BA5 make waves across the country.

The health department bases its decision on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

three-tier criteria of community high, medium, or low levels of COVID-19 rates.

L.A. County Public Health Director told the L.A. County Board of

Supervisors on Tuesday and reiterated on Thursday that an indoor mask mandate will be imposed unless

there is a significant reversal in the current hospitalization rates caused by the coronavirus within

the next two weeks. That means the mandate would take effect on July 29th. If the mandate does

indeed take effect, it would then expire

two weeks later if numbers return to a medium rating. This week, top U.S. health officials issued

a warning about the new Omicron subvariance, but also said the country has the tools to prevent

people from getting seriously ill. That includes vaccines and antiviral treatments. The possibility
