Good morning in the news this morning.

The U.S. military conducted retaliatory airstrikes in eastern Syria on Thursday against Iranian-backed groups after a deadly drone strike targeting a U.S. base in the region killed a U.S. contractor and injured six others, including five U.S. military service members, the Pentagon said. Two of the wounded service members were treated on site while the other four Americans were medically evaluated to coalition medical facilities in Iraq.

U.S. intelligence assessed the one-way attack drone that struck the base was Iranian in origin.

At the direction of President Joe Biden, airstrikes were issued in response to the attack.

The United States has about 900 troops in eastern Syria

providing assistance to Syrian Kurdish forces in preventing a resurgence of the Islamic State.

In recent months, some of the bases have been the target of drone strikes that had in

most instances not led to injuries or physical damage. Iranian-backed groups in Syria are believed

to have been responsible for these attacks.

Six highway workers were killed when a vehicle crashed into a construction zone in Baltimore, Maryland, according to police, yet awful.

The crash happened at 1240 in the afternoon Wednesday at a work zone between temporary concrete walls on interstate 695 in Woodlawn, about eight miles northwest of Baltimore. State police said in a news release. A driver of an ACAura was attempting to change lanes when vehicles struck the front

corner panel of the passenger side of another vehicle. Crash team investigators believe this

caused the ACAura to lose control and subsequently travel into the work zone. All six workers were pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.

The driver was the only person in the ACRA and was taken to a trauma center for medical

treatment.

The driver of the other vehicle, a Volkswagen, stopped near the scene where the vehicle

became disabled.

The Volkswagen driver wasn't injured.
