A federal judge has ruled that a nonprofit seeking to open a safe injection site in Philadelphia

would not violate a federal drug law known commonly as Crackhouse statute.

Safe House, a nonprofit chaired by former Governor Ed Rendell, wants to spend almost $2 million a year to operate a safe injection in Philadelphia.

Mayor Jim Kenney announced last year that he and the other city officials supported safe houses

planned to open locations where people can inject drugs under the supervision of a doctor

or nurse who can administer an overdose antidote if necessary.

Philadelphia has the highest opioid death rate of any large U.S. city.

During the summer, Kenny toured safe injection sites in Canada.

U.S. attorney William McSwain sued safe house last year, arguing it's seeking to break the law and normalize the use of deadly drugs like heroin and fentanyl.

A lease has been signed for a safe injection site inside the Constitution Health Plaza at the corner of Broad and McKean

streets in South Philadelphia.

Apparently, there's like an urgent care or some other health offices in that same building.

The supervised injection site would be the first of its kind in the country right here in

Philadelphia.

Safe House will hold a press conference today at 1030 to discuss more details.

So I don't think it's set in stone, but it's a lot

closer and I think quicker than people thought this was going to happen. I mean, this is a weird

topic and, you know, it's, you know, debate it all over the place. Like I just, and I personally,

you know, I can, and I do see both sides of it, but I just don't understand. I don't understand it. How you can't just arrest these people on the spot for possession. Right. Right? Well, the big thing that's causing them the most controversy is they're planning a drive-through, which I think is really problematic. Right, Kathy? That's what I mean. Did you have another, can we have like a murder house where you can just go and murder somebody you don't like? Or can we just have a place where it's, you know, that was the original plan for the happy place. Murder house. Yeah, and they thought for the holiday season, it wouldn't work. That would not work. Safe injection spots, you know, like, you know, horror houses, places to go snort your Coke where it's going to be a little bit safer or to go smoke your marijuana.

You know, like any sort of illegal activity.

Can we just do it as long as it's monitored and safe?
