Good morning in the news this morning.

Philadelphia's police commissioner is defending her department and the city's response to days of widespread protests against police brutality last summer in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd.

Commissioner Danielle Outlaw held a news conference Thursday to answer harsh criticism of her direct decision-making issues in a report on the protest response.

Conducted by two independent firms and released by the city's controller's office on Wednesday,

the report prompted the editorial board of the city's largest newspaper to call for Outlaw's resignation.

Outlaw says she will not resign and the mayor did not ask her to step down.

Critics and protesters denounce the city's use of tear gas and other less than

lethal munitions during at least three incidents. There was simply not a blueprint for what our

city faced this summer. Outlaw said, did I lead this department last year? Absolutely. And some.

She continued to say, no police commissioner has ever had to deal with what we dealt with this past

year, she said. But police have dealt with large civil

unrest in the past. There was the Marty Grawe riot on South Street in 2001. In 2008, Phillies fans

took over the streets and then 10 years later, fans descended on Center City after the Super Bowl win.

None of those incidents required the use of tear gas to control the crowd. Police instead used other tactics.

shortages of the products, said Kristen Daraq, the Grape Nuts brand manager. She said in an email

statement, Grape Nuts should be fully back on the shelves in the spring, she said.
