In the news this morning, a police officer died from injuries sustained as President Donald Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol in a violent event that is now forcing hard questions about the president's remaining days in office and the ability of the Capitol Police to secure the area.

The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement that 42-year-old officer Brian Sicknick was injured while physically engaging with protesters during the Wednesday's riot.

He is the fifth person to die because of the melee. The brother of Officer Sicknick released the

following statement to ABC News. After a day of fighting for his life, he passed away a hero.

I would like to thank all of his brothers and sisters in law enforcement for the incredible

compassion and support they have shown my family. My family and I hope that our

privacy can be respected as we grieve. Thank you. The rampage that shocked the world and left the

country on edge forced the resignation of three top capital security officials over the failure

to stop the breach. It led lawmakers to demand a review of operations and an FBI briefing over what

they called a terrorist attack.

And it is prompting a broader reckoning over Trump's tenure in office and what comes next for a torn nation.

Protesters were urged by Trump during a rally near the White House earlier Wednesday to head to Capitol Hill where lawmakers were scheduled to confirm Biden's presidential victory.

In the wake of the violent mob of pro-Trump rioters

storming the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, as Congress counted the electoral votes, the United States

Secret Service said that they are anticipating and are prepared for all possible contingencies

to ensure that the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris

remains a safe and secure event.
