forgotten, Stanislaus, Bishop of Krakow, martyr, and patron saint of Poland. His story echoes

that of other bold saints like Thomas More and Thomas Beckett, men who stood up to kings and paid the

price. Stanislaus was born in 1030 in the little village near Krakow. He was bright, deeply devout, and

eventually went on to study in Paris,

which was unusual for the time. When he came back to Poland, he was ordained a priest, and quickly

became known for preaching, which actually stirred people to change, not just the poor and humble,

but priests and nobles too. By 1072, Stanislaus was the bishop of Krakoff, and that's when things got dangerous.

He found himself at odds with the king, Boluslaus II, a powerful ruler known for violent wars

and worse behavior behind palace walls.

Stanislaus called him out first privately, then publicly.

Volosloss pretended to repent, then he went back to his old ways.
