Today is also the traditional feast of St. John before the Latin Gate, and it was traditionally

a Roman feast, which was known by another name as well, St. John in oil.

This is St. John the Evangelist, and he's remembered on this date for an event that happened.

And it's hard to imagine anyone more devoted to Jesus than St. John, who was called the beloved disciple,

scattered. But his story, as we know, didn't end there. Around the year 95, John was an old man,

the last surviving apostle, and still serving as the spiritual leader for the Christian communities

around Asia. But Rome wasn't impressed with his resume. Emperor Domitian had him arrested in

Ephesus and shipped to the capital. Now, Domitian, not known for restraint, he ordered that

John be executed in a truly horrific way by being thrown into a vat of boiling oil. And we would

expect that to be the end of the story,

in normal circumstances. But it wasn't. John, facing what should have been certain death,

climbed into the oil, and nothing happened. No burns, no screams. Instead, after a few moments,

he stepped out of the cauldron, refreshed, as if he'd taken a soak in a healing spring.
