O God, who didst strengthen Holy Casimir with the virtue of constancy in the midst of royal luxury and the snares of the world,

we beseech thee that by his intercession thy faithful people may despise earthly things and ever aspire

to those of heaven. Casimir had everything laid out for him, born into royalty, heir to the throne,

and raised with the best education by his tutor,

But from a young age he was different.

He lived with discipline, spent long hours in prayer, and committed himself to celibacy.

Even his critics couldn't call him weak.

At the age of 15, Casimir was sent to Hungary to take the throne

after some nobles there got fed up with their king. He did what many young men have done. He

obeyed orders. But the plan was a mess. His army was outnumbered, soldiers were deserting and the

whole thing was doomed from the start. So he turned back. His father, furious at the failed campaign, locked him up for three

months. But instead of breaking, Casimir doubled down. He refused to take part in war again,

no matter what. Even when pressured to marry the emperor's daughter, he stood firm in the vow of

celibacy. He ruled briefly in Poland while his father was away, but his life was cut short.
