St. Kunagundas wasn't just an empress. She was a woman of deep faith, unshakable integrity,

and serious courage. Born to nobility, she married St. Henry, Duke of Bavaria, who later became the Holy Roman Emperor. Together they ruled, but their marriage was anything but ordinary.

Before they wed, they made a mutual vow of virginity, dedicating themselves fully to God.

At one point, jealous rivals sped nasty rumors about Kunukundas, accusing her of being unfaithful.

Rather than let the gossip fester, she did something bold. She walked

barefoot across red, hot plowshares to prove her innocence. When she came out unscathed,

Henry realized his mistake in ever doubting her. From then on, they worked together to build

churches, support the poor, and strengthen the faith of their people. After Henry's death in 1024, Kunugendez could have lived out her life as a wealthy widow,

but that wasn't her style. Instead, she gave away her riches, founded a Benedictine convent,

and joined as a simple nun. She didn't want special treatment either. She prayed, worked,

and served the sick just like everybody else.

Even on her deathbed, she refused any lavish burial, insisting that she be laid to rest in the plain habit of her order.

She passed away on March 3, 1040, and was canonized in 1,200.
