But first, the collect of today's Mass.

May heavenly grace, we beseech thee, O Lord, prosper thy church,

which thou hast mercifully enlightened by the blessed virtues and teachings of glorious and blessed John

Christosom, by confessor and bishop. Born in Antioch in 344, St. John Christosom chose a life of

prayer and solitude, retreating to a mountain for six years to master the art of silence and reflection.

When he returned to Antioch, his eloquence as a priest earned him widespread

admiration, and in 398, he was named the Bishop of Constantinople. St. John's sermons captivated

audiences, and boldly denounced vice even among the powerful. His reforms included shortening

the liturgy to encourage greater participation

in Mass, reflecting his deep belief in the transformative power of the Eucharist. St. Nihilus recounts

that during the Holy Sacrifice, St. John often witnessed heavenly beings in reverence, assisting in the

sacred mystery. Despite his popularity, his outspokenness made some enemies.

Banished in 403 and briefly reinstated, his final exile in 404 led to his death in 407,

after enduring brutal conditions.

On his deathbed, he received Vieticum, donned white garments, and uttered his final words.
