O God, you who see that we put no trust in anything we do,

mercifully grant that by the protection of the doctor of the Gentiles,

we may be defended against all adversity.

Imagine leaving everything behind.

Family, comfort, even society itself, to live alone in the wilderness.

Well, that's exactly what St. Romanus did in the 5th century.

At the age of 35, he walked away from his old life

and spent some time at a monastery in Lyon at a church built over the remains of Christian martyrs.

But even that wasn't isolated enough for him. He eventually retreated deep into the forests of

Mount Jura between France and Switzerland, settling in a remote spot where two rivers met. There, he lived off

the land, praying, reading, and working to survive. But solitude didn't last long. His brother,

Lu Piccinus, soon joined him. And before they knew it, others followed, inspired by their holiness.

Soon a whole community formed, leading to the founding of several monasteries

and a convent, La Bohm, where no man, except Romanus for his burial, was ever allowed to enter.
