Let's look at today's scene.

Early on in the 8th century was home to a young boy named Eukarius, born into a noble

family.

But even with wealth and privilege, he saw through the illusion of the world's pleasures.

Inspired by St. Paul's words, he left it all behind,

retreating to the Abbey of Jumiege in Normandy, where he lived in prayer and penance. But the world

wasn't done with him. When the Bishop of Orleon died, the people insisted Eukarius take his place.

He resisted, but his fellow monks urged him to accept. As bishop, he stood firm

against injustice, especially when Charles Martel began seizing church lands to fund his wars.

Eukarius spoke out boldly, and for that he was exiled, first to Cologne, then to a remote fortress

in present-day Belgium.

Even in exile, though, his holiness shone, the governor of the region was so moved by his virtue that he gave him freedom to live in the monastery of Santron.

There, Eukarius spent his last years in prayer, passing away in 743.
