Today let's look at the story of St. Margaret of Cortona. Her story isn't one of perfection,

instead it's one of redemption. Born in Tuscany in 1247, she lost her mother at seven

and found little love from her stepmother. Seeking affection,

she ran away with a nobleman, living with him for nine years and bearing his child. Then in an

instant everything changed. Her lover was murdered. With nowhere to go, Margaret turned to the Franciscans

in Cortona for charity. They asked her to change her life, but change wasn't easy.

The temptations of her old life still haunted her.

She decided, eventually, to take up a life of penance.

And later on, in a dramatic act of penance,

she walked through her old hometown with a rope around her neck,

begging everyone for forgiveness for her public sins. Her pain and her shame was so severe that

she even tried to disfigure her own face, only to be stopped by a wise friar from performing
