So today let's go back to Benevento in the seventh century.

This was a city caught between Christianity and lingering pagan superstitions, and in the middle of this stood Saint Barbatus.

Born in Italy, Barbatus became a priest, and he was known for his patience,

his humility, and powerful preaching. But when he called out his parishioner's sinful ways,

they turned on him, slandering him until he was forced to leave. He returned to Benevento,

where the people worshipped a golden viper and honored a tree with strange rituals.

Even their ruler, Prince Romuald, took part.

Barbados warned them of disaster, and soon after Emperor Constance I second laid siege to their city.

In the chaos, the bishop of Benevento died, and Barbatus was chosen to lead them after.

With new authority, he guided the people away from their idolatry,

tearing down the golden viper and destroying every trace of superstition.

As a bishop, he defended the faith at councils in both Rome and Constantinople before passing away after a life of service in 682.
