Saint Perpetuous may not be a household name today, but back in the 5th century, he was a big

deal, especially if you lived anywhere near Tours, France.

As the bishop there from 461 to 491, Perpetuous didn't just maintain the church.

He grew it, loved it, and left it stronger than he found it. This guy in particular was all

about souls. He preached constantly, convened synods to guide his people, and made smart

practical reforms to help folks grow in virtue. But he also had a deep

respect for the past, especially for the saints. His devotion to St. Martin of Tours, one of the

greatest bishops before him, was legendary. So many pilgrims kept showing up to St. Martin's tomb

that the church couldn't hold them. So, Perpetuous got to work expanding it. When it was

finished, he personally oversaw the dedication and moved St. Martin's remains to its new resting

place on July 4th, 473. That day became a festival for centuries. What's really touching, though,

is his will, written in 475 and still preserved today.

He forgave all debts owed to him, left his library and lands to the church, and made the poor his heirs.
