Born in northern Italy in 1694, St. Paul of the Cross lived in a time when many people

respected Jesus as a wise teacher, but had lost a sense of the mystery of his passion. Paul's

life would be a fiery answer to that forgetfulness. After a short stint as a soldier, Paul withdrew into solitude and prayer.

There, he developed a deep devotion to the suffering and crucified Christ. To him, the passion

wasn't just a past event. It was the living, breathing proof of God's overwhelming love for

humanity. This devotion didn't make him gloomy or detached,

but it filled him with a burning compassion for people's wounds and struggles. And so in 1720,

Paul founded the congregation of the Passion, better known as the Passionists. These priests and brothers

make a special vow. In addition to poverty, chastity, and obedience,

they are meant to keep alive the memory of Christ's passion in the hearts of the faithful.

And so they preached across Italy, especially to the poor and the forgotten,
