Hey everybody welcome back to Cold Case Murder Mysteries. I'm your host Ryan Kraus leading

you into the dark corners of the human mind once again to explore the unsolved

of Aila Reynolds, a 20 month old child from Waterville, Maine, who vanished from her father's

home after being put down to sleep at 8 p.m. on the night of December 16th,

2011. When family members woke the next morning and discovered the little girl was gone,

they called 911 for help, setting off what became the most

extensive search ever conducted for a missing person in the state of Maine and the third

largest in the history of the US. Despite the effort, however,

Aila's whereabouts remain unknown and the police assert she's dead.

Now, Waterville is located along the I-95 corridor and has a population of approximately 16,600

residents. Like most places in small town Maine, it's surrounded by ample forestry, bodies of water, and hiking trails, all of which is to say that it wouldn't be too difficult to find a place to conceal the body of a small child.

Of course, it's also a town comprised of a population more likely to come from

modest means, with the 2,000 U.S. Census showing that nearly 20 percent of residents lived

below the poverty line in terms of income, which is a rate nearly double that of the county in which it resides.

And that's generally what we have in this case.

Aila's father, Justin DePetro, lives in his mother's one-floor ranch style home in town, which also

has some type of finished basement that allows the occupants to sleep down there as well.

Now, there's a neighboring house on one side of this structure

with perhaps no more than 10 feet separating the two homes.

On the other side is a driveway that leads back to a small garage.
