Hey everybody welcome back to cold case murder mysteries. I'm your host Ryan Kraus taking you on another fascinating journey into the criminal mind as we explore the infamous Bain family murders.

Early on the morning of June 20th, 1994, 22-year-old David Bain, a part-time newspaper carrier and student who resided with his family

in the Anderson's Bay section of Dunedin, New Zealand, returned home from his local deliveries

to discover a gruesome crime scene that revealed his parents

and three siblings had all been shot dead with a 22 caliber rifle.

He quickly phoned police, specifically the 111 emergency number, and proclaimed,

they're all dead.

Soon after, police arrived at the Bain household to find nothing less than a massacre, which left nobody but David alive in the aftermath.

Upon reaching the body of Robin Bain, David's 58-year-old father, who was lying on the floor near the family's desktop computer, they noticed

a bullet wound to his temple and the rifle lying by his side.

It was the scene typical of murder suicide.

But before long, David's behavior, in combination with evidence gathered at the scene, would suggest

the true narrative at play in this story was one involving deception

perpetrated by the sole surviving member of the family. He would go on to be

convicted of the murders in court and also subsequently found

innocent upon appeal, leaving the Bain family murders as perhaps the most

notorious cold case in the country's history, one that draws varying opinions even to this day.

But what we're told is that there are no suspects other than David and Robin Bain. There's no evidence to suggest an intruder entered the home from outside.

So did Robin Bain wait for his son to go off on his paper that morning

and proceed to annihilate the remaining family members

before taking his own life as part of a murder suicide?

Or did young David Bain try to fabricate that narrative in an effort to disguise the true killer?

...
