This is CBS Eye on the world. I'm John Bachelor. 80 years later, the Normandy

invasions. 80 years later, I welcome Anatole Leven of the Quincy Institute for

responsible statecraft to comment on the facts

of the anniversary and the remembrance of the landing on Normandy.

Eight years ago, right now, what is missing is significant given the headlines that we have

from Europe these last years about the conflict in Ukraine, about the NATO participation in Ukraine. about NATO's

participation in Ukraine about NATO's posture towards the Russian Federation

and its allies China and Tehran.

We have now an irony that needs explanation, not present to my reading at the Normandy anniversary,

are representatives of either the Russian Federation or Soviet veterans who participated in

Operation Bagrathion or participated in the war at all. All of these men who are

present in the photographs I'm seeing from Normandy are

men in their late 80s and 90s that's where we are in remembering 80 years later and

I told a very good evening to you, I mentioned Russia because it is my reading of history.

Russia fought alone for two years against the Nazi war machine asking begging implicating for a second front.

Roosevelt, the President of the United States and Churchill, Prime Minister of Britain often met with

Stalin and were peppered with telegrams from Stalin saying where's the second

front? They tried to construct the Allied bombing of Germany as a second front.

They tried to construct the landings in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy as a second front.
