Hello and welcome back to the Curious Kid podcast. We've got a fun one for you this week. When you think of amazing things animals can do, you might think about fast animals like the cheetah that can travel at 75 miles per hour or the black marlin, which is actually faster and can swim at 80 miles per hour.

Maybe you think about animals with an amazing sense of smell.

Dogs are well known for their sense of smell.

However, elephants have a sense of smell about twice as strong and sophisticated as a dog.

But when people think about amazing things that amazing animals can do,

they rarely think about the subject of this week's episode. Olivia, tell everyone what we are

talking about this week. This week we're talking about spider webs. Amazing spider webs. Let's start this

episode off the same way we do each episode with a question of the week.

The question of the week is, what's the difference of spider webs and cobwebs?

Good one. Okay. To better understand how spider webs work, it's helpful to know why spiders make them.

It's good for spiders to make spider webs because they can trap food to eat.

Yep, that's right. Not all spiders use webs to catch insects.

Some don't spin webs at all, but many spiders do make webs.

And after they are finished making their beautiful webs, they wait to feel

a vibration that is made in the web when an insect is stuck to the web. That's when they spring into action

and enjoy their meal. So spider webs are made of super strong silk. I'm guessing the spiders just carry the

silk around all day until they are ready to make a web.

Silly, Daddy, that's not how it works at all. Spiders keep the silk in their belly.

No way. It can't be. I'm not able to make anything with my belly, although occasionally some lint

comes from my belly button, but that's not nearly as cool as what spiders have in their bellies.

Are you sure that spiders have silk in their bellies that they use to make spider webs?

I'm sure. The silk is so strong, it's stronger than steel.
