So I don't know about you but my heart has felt pretty heavy these past few weeks.

It's heartbreaking to see the impact the invasion on Ukraine is having.

So today I wanted to touch on cultivating compassion in times of suffering.

Not just for others but for ourselves as well.

I wanted to read a little passage from a book called Start Where You Are by Pema Children.

She is a Tibetan Buddhist nun and meditation teacher.

It goes only to the degree that we've gotten to know our personal pain.

Only to the degree that we've related with pain at all.

Will we be fearless enough, brave enough and enough of a warrior to be willing to feel the pain of others?

The past two years have really tested our capacity for empathy and compassion and especially so with frontline healthcare workers who have witnessed ongoing suffering day after day.

But if we drain our empathy account it can actually make it pretty impossible to act with compassion.

There is a really lovely compassion technique that you can try and you can actually do this anywhere in a meditation or even on the go.

And you start by focusing your attention on your breathing following each in breath and each out breath.
