Summary

Welcome to the Gospel in a Year on the Catholic Sprouts Podcast. This year we will walk together through all 4 Gospels. The fun officially starts next week. This week we are preparing by discussing what to expect from the Gospel in a Year.

On this episode we discuss how the Gospels were written. We also strive to understand that the Gospels were written to spread the Faith, not to be a history book.

To get the most out of this journey through the Gospels, we suggest you do the following two things to prepare:
1 PRINT THE GOSPEL IN A YEAR NOTEBOOK. It's free and ready for you right here ---> http://catholicsprouts.com/the-gospels-in-a-year-on-the-catholic-sprouts-podcast

2 LOCATE A BIBLE! We will be reading from the New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE), so that is the best translation to follow along with for young Catholics. However, if you have older Catholics, it's fun to follow along in another great Catholic translation (we recommend either the Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition (RSV-CE) and the New Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition (NRSV-CE)).

Thank you for joining us!
Come Lord Jesus!

Today we're going to go take a little look at history.

How did these books come to be written and included in our Bible? So there are four stages of the creation of the Gospels. The first stage

1:05.7

was that these men, or people that these men knew very well and heard preach, that Jesus knew them,

1:15.2

talked to them, performed miracles that they saw, died on a cross and rose from the dead.

1:22.6

So that is stage one of the gospel, that these events really happened. God became man and actually said these words

1:32.4

that are included in the gospels. And he also, while Jesus was here, he spent a lot of time

1:38.7

teaching his apostles. We'll see that in the gospel that he's very patient, spends three years teaching his

1:47.3

apostles, telling them stories, but then also explaining those stories. Stage two is the ministry

1:54.6

of the apostles. After Jesus rose from the dead, he spent 40 days with the apostles, and he commissioned them to go and spread

2:04.3

the good news to baptize in his name. And that's what they did. They went to all corners of the

2:10.3

known world, and almost all of them died martyrs for the faith. Now, the third stage is the actual writing of the gospel. And it's important

2:19.9

that we know that it's not like Jesus ascended into heaven and then St. John took out a pen

2:26.2

and just started writing a book. That's not how it happened. People weren't as reliant on
