We're reading the Gospels this school year.

Today is day 49.

We are in the Gospel of Matthew, reading chapter 27, verses 33 through 66. We are at the end of this gospel and will hear the account of the crucifixion today. I'm reading from the New American Translation of the Bible, and I want to encourage you once more to open up your ears and your heart, to listen to the story in a new and fresh way. Let's pray that we can truly

receive the message that God has for us today. In the name of the Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit, amen. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, amen.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love.

Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created, and you will renew the face of the earth.

Amen.

In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen.

A reading from the Holy Gospel of Matthew, chapter 27, verses 33 through 66.

And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means place of the skull, they gave Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall.

But when he tasted it, he refused to drink.

After they had crucified him, they divided his garments by casting lots.

Then they sat down and kept watch over him. And they placed over his head the written charge against him. This is Jesus, the king of the Jews. Two revolutionaries were

crucified with him, one on his right and the other on his left. Those passing by reviled him, shaking their

heads and saying, You, who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save

yourself if you are the Son of God, and come down from the cross. Likewise, the chief priests with the scribes and the elders mocked him and said,

He saved others. He cannot save himself.
