| 0:00.0 | You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith. |
| 0:29.7 | Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Friday, March 11th, 2020. All week we have been talking about the second deadly sin, which is envy. Remember, envy is jealousy. When something good happens to another |
| 0:36.2 | person I feel bad, when something bad happens to another person, I feel bad, when something bad happens |
| 0:38.7 | to another person I feel good. It is what kills all love. Yesterday, we talked about Christ |
| 0:44.9 | speaking to the good thief on the cross. We talked about how the unrepentant thief |
| 0:50.8 | looked with eyes of envy on Jesus, right? He was only thinking of himself, |
| 0:55.7 | save yourself and me if you're the Messiah. But the repentant thief, the good thief, |
| 1:01.5 | he took pity on Jesus. He saw his pain. He believed he was the Messiah. And because of those |
| 1:08.5 | simple things, they're not simple things, they're big things. He's a saint. |
| 1:13.1 | He's in heaven. And so, Sprouts, Venerable Fulton Sheen pulls out two lessons that we can |
| 1:18.8 | really take away and reflect on with these words from the gospel. Lessons about envy. |
| 1:24.7 | Now, the first lesson is this. Envy is the source of all wrong judgments of other people. |
| 1:32.8 | When we see someone and they're so pretty or they're so good at sports or they're so smart and we feel |
| 1:38.3 | envious, oftentimes we misjudge them, right? They think, we think, oh, well, they're smart, but they're really not very nice. Or, oh, they're pretty, but blah, blah, blah, blah, right? Things that aren't even true. We're making up lies about them so that we feel better. Again, envy is so focused on ourselves and so willing to hurt another person. And we see this with the unrepentant thief. |
| 2:02.9 | Right? He is so blinded by envy that he misses his savior next to him. And because he misses |
| 2:10.6 | his savior, he misses out on salvation. This is a big deal. When we are envious of other people, we misjudge them. We miss out |
| 2:20.3 | on friendships. We miss out on everything because we're so blinded and focused on ourselves. |
| 2:26.7 | So that is the first thing. Envy blinds us and it forces us to misjudge other people. |
| 2:35.2 | Now, the second lesson that we see from the good thief is that the remedy to envy, |
| 2:43.0 | the remedy is pity. |
| 2:45.8 | Now, I think sometimes we misunderstand that word pity. |
| 2:48.6 | It doesn't mean that I think someone else is pathetic. |
