| 0:00.0 | You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith. |
| 0:23.7 | Hey there, Spouts. |
| 0:27.2 | Today is Tuesday, March 8th, 2022. |
| 0:32.7 | Today is also the feast day of a great Portuguese saint, St. John of God. |
| 0:35.6 | Now, this week we are talking about the sin of envy. |
| 0:39.5 | And yesterday we spoke about how envy kills love because it is jealousy. When someone close to us has something good happened, we feel rotten. |
| 0:46.1 | And when somebody has something rotten happened to them, we feel good, right? It's this really |
| 0:51.2 | nasty, warped way of seeing the world where we focus on ourselves and not on each other. |
| 0:59.0 | Now, today we're going to talk about examples of envy and the horrible things that they led to that we see in the Bible. |
| 1:06.8 | So the first one, this really clear example of envy happened right when Christ was born. |
| 1:13.4 | So remember, Christ was born in Bethlehem and the three wise men were traveling to see him. |
| 1:19.3 | But first they stop and they see Herod. |
| 1:22.9 | Of course, they tell Herod and Herod says, oh, come and tell me so I can go and worship. But was he really |
| 1:29.3 | planning to go and worship the newborn king of the Jews? Of course not. He was planning to go there |
| 1:35.3 | and kill him. Now, why? Why would Herod care so much to kill a tiny baby, right? It's envy. Herod worried that the Messiah, right, |
| 1:49.8 | that he would come and take his earthly kingdom away from him. Remember, the way that the |
| 1:55.7 | Jews thought the Messiah would come is that he would come, he would lead this big army, |
| 2:00.6 | kind of like King David, and that he would come, he would lead this big army, kind of like King David, |
| 2:02.2 | and that he would overthrow the people that were oppressing the Jews, namely the Romans. |
| 2:07.6 | So Herod thought that this baby, whoever it was, that he would grow up and be a military |
| 2:12.5 | leader and kick him out of power. So he was envious, And what did he end up doing? Right? He ended up going |
| 2:20.0 | into Bethlehem and killing many, many baby boys, horrible, just because he thought this good thing |
