0:31.6	Hey there, Sprouse. Today is Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022. Today is also the feast day of St. Polycarp. St. Polycarp is an early Christian martyr. He was also a bishop. Now Polycarp lived so long ago that he actually
0:41.4	studied under John the Apostle, John the Evangelist, who called himself the beloved, the beloved
0:49.6	disciple in the gospel. So Polycarp was one of his students. He went on to become a bishop of a place
0:56.6	called Smyrna in what is now Turkey. And while he was bishop, the persecutions of Christians
1:03.6	began to happen. But the officials that lived in this area, they realized that before Christians
1:10.0	would just, they would just renounce their
1:11.9	faith, right? All you had to do was offer a pinch of incense to the false gods and you could go on
1:17.9	with your life. And the Christians would just do this, right? They thought it wasn't worth dying.
1:22.6	But then all of the sudden, they started to see that Christians were refusing to even offer a pinch of incense
1:29.0	to a false God, that they would rather die. And they thought, well, what has changed? And what
1:34.7	had changed is that Polycarp had become their bishop? And he had helped these early Christians
1:40.6	just realized that nothing, nothing was worth compromising their faith. So Christians
1:46.7	started to be martyred. Finally, they hunted down Bishop Polycarp and they sentenced him to death
1:53.1	when he also refused to renounce his faith. They pulled him into a huge stadium. The entire town had come there to watch this bishop die.
2:04.0	They ordered that he be burned at the stake.
2:06.6	And in order to make sure that Christians wouldn't run away that they would stay in the flames,
2:11.4	they would nail their hands to a wooden plank that had been hammered into the ground.
2:17.3	But Polycarp refused to have his hands nailed.
2:19.9	He said, I will not leave the flames.
2:22.1	I am happy to die for Christ.
2:24.6	But then when they lit the flames, all of a sudden, miraculously, the flames wouldn't touch his body.
