Hi there, sprouts. Today is Friday, February 4th, 2022. I'm Sister Sidney Moss, a daughter of Mary,

0:36.1

help of Christians. This week, we've been talking about vocations. And today I want to talk about a very important word tied into your vocation, discernment.

0:40.3

Discernment is prayerfully taking the time to discover what God is calling you to.

0:45.8

You will not only discern your big vocation to marriage or religious life or the priesthood.

0:51.8

There will be many things you need to discern in your lifetime.

0:55.2

One day you'll discern which high school you should go to, and then which college you should

0:59.4

attend, and then which job you should apply for. Those are all big steps that you need to discern

1:05.6

with God's help to make sure you do the right thing. And then when it's time to discern your vocation,

1:12.4

1:17.4

I want to tell you a story about another one of our Salesian blesseds. Her name is

1:22.4

Blessed Laura Vakunia. She was born in Chile in 1891. When she was only nine years old, her family had to leave

1:31.8

Chile and moved to Argentina. Unfortunately, her dad got very sick and passed away, and her mom was left

1:39.3

with Laura and her little sister. When they arrived in Argentina, they lived with a man who was a very wealthy

1:46.4

landowner. This man didn't really take very good care of Laura's mom and her family,

1:52.1

but the mom felt like she needed to stay there so that she could physically and materially provide

1:58.0

for her daughters, even though she wasn't spiritually providing for them.

2:03.0

The one good thing is that this man did agree to pay for the tuition so that Laura and her

2:08.6

sister could go study at our Salesian sister school in Argentina.

2:13.1

So when Laura was nine years old, she and her sister went to live with the sisters at the school

2:17.9

because it was too far to travel between their house and the school.

2:22.6

When Laura was studying there, she realized that her mom was not living a holy life.
