Hey there, sproutsouts. Today is Tuesday, January 25th, 2020. Now this week, we are talking about saints that are celebrating feast days this week. Yesterday, we talked about St. Francis DeSales on his feast day, and today, January 25th,

0:48.6

is the feast of the conversion of St. Paul. St. Paul, of course, was part of the early church.

0:58.4

He was born with the name Saul. He was raised as a Pharisee, a very well-respected, highly educated man in the Jewish faith.

1:06.5

He was present when the church, the Christian church, began to be persecuted. In fact, many people believe that he was actually present when the first martyr for our faith, St. Stephen, was

1:12.6

stoned to death in Jerusalem. He was so determined to end worship of Jesus Christ that he left

1:20.6

Jerusalem, headed to Damascus, and we hear in the Acts of the Apostles that he was determined to round

1:27.2

up Christians in Damascus

1:29.1

and bring them back to Jerusalem in chains.

1:33.8

However, something happened on the way to Damascus.

1:37.4

In the book, The Acts of the Apostles, we hear that suddenly there was a blinding light

1:42.9

that Paul fell from his horse and he heard a voice

1:46.6

and that voice said, Paul, why are you persecuting me?

1:53.7

The voice identified itself as that of Jesus Christ.

1:57.8

Paul remained blind.

1:59.6

He was led into the city of Damascus, where he lay in bed for three

2:03.2

days, until finally God directed one of his followers in Damascus to go and pray with Paul. As they

2:11.3

prayed, scales fell from Paul's eyes, he was able to see. And from that moment, he was converted. He was completely,

2:22.6

completely devoted to Jesus Christ. He asked to be baptized. And he got up from his bed,

2:28.8

and he began to preach and to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to the furthest corners of the world that

2:37.1

he could reach. He spent the rest of his life traveling. In fact, he was in all sorts of

2:43.3

traveling mishaps. He was in shipwrecks. He was stranded. He was oftentimes placed in jail or even on house arrest for preaching the good news of Jesus Christ.
