| 0:00.0 | You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith. |
| 0:29.9 | Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Monday, January 24th, 2020. This week on the Catholic Spouts podcast, we are going to actually be talking about the five saints, or five of the saints that have feast days this week. Each saint that we talk about |
| 0:39.7 | each day of the week is an incredible saint that you likely have heard of before. But what we're |
| 0:45.9 | going to talk about today is how these saints, some of whom lived at the very beginning of our church, |
| 0:52.8 | did such incredible things or set such incredible examples that they still |
| 0:57.3 | are impacting not only our church, but they're impacting our very lives as Christians to this day. |
| 1:05.1 | So today on January 24th, we are actually celebrating the feast day of St. Francis DeSales. |
| 1:12.7 | Now, St. Francis DeSales lived at the end of the 1500s, beginning of the 1600s. |
| 1:18.6 | He was born in France. He was born to a noble family, born into their castle. |
| 1:24.5 | Although he was an incredibly intelligent young man who had a doctorate in law when he was |
| 1:30.9 | only 24 years old, which is remarkable, he also had a strong devotion to God. In fact, when he was only |
| 1:39.0 | 11 years old, he decided to consecrate himself to God. It took him many, many years to convince his father that he should be a priest. |
| 1:47.6 | And when his father finally gave in, gave his permission, Francis was ordained six months later. |
| 1:54.4 | And after he had been ordained a priest, he volunteered for one of the most dangerous assignments at the time. |
| 2:01.8 | Now, in the 1500s, into the 1600s, this is a period in the church known as the Reformation. |
| 2:09.6 | The Reformation. |
| 2:11.2 | Now, before this, for 1,500 years, there had only been one church. |
| 2:17.3 | If you were Christian, then you were Catholic. You went to |
| 2:21.4 | Mass, you received the Eucharist, you learned about Mary and the Rosary and the Saints. There was one |
| 2:26.9 | unified church. But starting with Martin Luther in the 1500s, people began to break away from |
| 2:34.0 | that church. And we know those groups of Christians |
| 2:37.0 | today as Protestants, whether they be Lutheran, Baptist, evangelical, whatever it is, but that all |
