Today is Monday, August 2, 2021.

Now, this week, we are going to be talking about the fifth beatitude.

Yes, we are in the second half of the beatitudes. We have already done the first four.

So just to review from the Gospel of Matthew, the first four are, blessed are the poor and spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn,

for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. And blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Today, that brings us to the fifth beatitude,

which Jesus said this way,

as he preached to the people on the sermon of the mount,

he said,

Blessed are the merciful,

for they will receive mercy.

So this week we are talking all about mercy. Both blessed or happy are we if we give mercy. And the reward for giving mercy is getting mercy. So it sounds like

probably the best place for us to start is for us to talk

about what mercy is. Now, mercy is something we all experience. It's something that we all want and

maybe withhold from people or give to people. But the best place to start when we're

understanding mercy is this. God himself is mercy. It is what God is. I know that probably

doesn't help a lot, but God is the tender source of all mercy.

And mercy, of course, is a big concept. It's sort of like two things joined together.
