0:29.0	Hey there, Sprouse. Today is Thursday, August 27th, 2020. This week on the Catholic Spouts podcast, we are talking about fear. We've already talked about how the world is, a little bit of a
0:35.0	scarier place now, but how we need to remember that we cannot be
0:39.9	controlled by fear because we live in a world with Jesus. We looked at the example of St. Louis
0:47.2	King of France who boldly went out and fought in the Crusades, even though it was a terribly
0:51.9	dangerous thing to do. And we reminded ourselves that Jesus is always there on the other side of death, that he
0:59.7	has conquered death, and that we should never be afraid of death.
1:04.4	Now, today is the feast day of St. Monica.
1:08.3	St. Monica is best known because she was the mother of a great saint, St. Monica. St. Monica is best known because she was the mother of a great saint.
1:13.6	Saint Monica's son, St. Augustine, will be celebrating his feast day tomorrow. But today,
1:20.4	we are going to talk about St. Monica, because if there wasn't a St. Monica, if St. Monica had not done so boldly and determinedly what she did, we would not have a St. Augustine.
1:36.3	So St. Monica, they lived in northern Africa, and her husband was a Roman official. So they were a pretty important family.
1:45.1	They were pretty wealthy.
1:46.2	She was able to give her son, St. Augustine, everything that he needed in terms of food and clothing.
1:53.0	But also she gave him a tremendous education.
1:56.9	But St. Monica, for most of her life, lived with a broken heart. She was Christian. She loved Jesus Christ,
2:05.3	but she was devastated because her husband was a pagan. And her son, St. Augustine, was also.
2:13.5	They both refused to believe in Jesus Christ and they lived a life full of sin.
2:19.4	St. Augustine in particular for most of his young life did all sorts of sinful things and he
2:25.0	he just simply couldn't believe in Christianity. He felt that he was perhaps too smart to believe
2:32.1	in Christianity. Now, St. Monica, no doubt, was not as smart as her son. So she knew
2:39.6	she couldn't argue with him. So she did the one thing that she knew could actually change his
