You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith.

0:30.2

Well, hey there, Sprouts. Today is Thursday, August 20th, 2020. This week on the Catholic Sprouts we are going through the 10th commandment. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's possession.

0:40.1

And we are learning that it's not enough just not to steal. We also need to pay attention to the intentions of our heart. Do we spend our time

0:46.9

desiring to have more? Do we plan our life in a way where we will get more money and be able to get

0:54.0

more things? Are we building

0:56.2

our future around things that we want? Or are we generously giving ourselves to other people and to God

1:04.9

so that God might use us to do His holy work? All week we have been talking about saints who really did make this

but there weren't very many of those. Mostly, there were just very poor people that farmed and barely made enough from their crops to survive.

2:03.6

Well, the St. Bernard of Clairvaux was born into a rich family in a castle, and he could

2:09.7

have lived there all of his life and not had very many worries, but that's not what he decided

2:15.3

to do. Instead, St. Bernard of Clairvote decided to walk away from this life of

2:20.8

comfort and luxury and instead become a monk. And as a monk, he owned nothing. In fact, monks took a vow of

2:30.3

poverty and they owned even less than the poor farmers at this time. So he could have been

2:37.7

rich, but instead he decided to live very poor. But even while he was poor, God used St. Bernard
