You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith.

0:28.1

Hey there, sprouts. Welcome back. This week we are talking about the Eighth Commandment, which commands us to be truthful to avoid falsehood and lies. We've already talked about the

0:33.6

fact that there is truth. Jesus Christ himself is that truth. And yesterday we talked about

0:40.0

the effects of lies, how lies destroy trust and therefore destroy relationships. Now today we are

0:48.1

going to talk about what it means to speak the truth and also situations where we aren't called to not be truthful, but we do have

0:58.6

an obligation perhaps to not share every tiny little thing. So first of all, what does it mean

1:06.4

to speak the truth? To speak the truth means that we know the truth and even though we might be

1:13.9

afraid, even though there might be consequences, we refuse to make up a lie. We refuse to do that.

1:23.5

We know that lies will always have consequences.

1:35.6

Sometimes the better option is to simply not speak at all if we are tempted to say something that is untrue.

1:47.9

And also, if you find yourself tempted to tell stories or to exaggerate, I know that this is a temptation for me and was particularly hard when I was a child. I encourage you to spend more time listening. Before you jump in with that big, fantastic story

1:56.7

that's only 50% true, spend time listening. And believe me when I tell you this, you are an

2:05.6

interesting, wonderful person without exaggerating anything. The stories that have happened to you are

2:13.9

worth telling and worth hearing without adding details that aren't true. So really believe

2:22.1

this. You are good and wonderful all on your own without exaggeration. Pause and remember that

2:32.0

before you launch into your next story that isn't quite 100% true.

2:37.9

Now, we've talked a lot about being truthful, but there are situations when we don't have to

2:43.3

share everything. For example, if you are in a situation where a good friend has gotten

2:49.8

a really bad haircut, they come up to you and

2:53.9

they demand what you think of it. Yes, if they really, really do want your opinion, yes,

3:00.3

you should tell them. But I encourage you to be governed by this rule also.

3:09.0

The golden rule.
