Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Monday, August 3, 2020. This week on the Catholic Sprouts podcast, we are moving on to the Eighth Commandment, which is you shall not bear false

witness against your neighbor. Or in other words, you shall not lie.

So this week we're going to spend a lot of time talking about what is truth, if we should be

truthful and honest in all that we do, the effects that lies can have, and also the ways that we

speak truth and live in the truth. But to start things off, we are actually going to go back to

the Bible, and we're going to read a passage from the Gospel of John. So at this point in the

gospel, Jesus has been arrested, and he is standing on trial in front of Pontius Pilate.

Of course, the Jews have brought him to the Romans to Pontius Pilate because they wish to have him executed.

So beginning in chapter 18, here is what it says.

So Pilate went back into the Potorium and summoned jesus and said to him are you the king of the jews jesus answered him do you say this on your own or have others told you about me pilot answered i am not a jew am? Your own nation and the chief priest handed you over to me.

What have you done? Jesus answered, my kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendance would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews.

But as it is, my kingdom is not here. So Pilate said to him, then you are a king? Jesus answered,

You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world to testify to the truth.

Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. Pilate said to him, what is truth?

So again, that is from the gospel of John. And what I want you to hear there is, of course,

the mentions of this funny little word, truth. Now, we live in a world where people like to

deny that there actually is truth, that there is right and wrong and true and untrue. And even Pilate feels this way. Jesus Christ says that he came into the

world to testify to the truth and that if we belong to the truth, we belong to him. And Pilate's only

response is, what is truth? Or in other words, there's no such thing as truth. Now, the way that our world today

would phrase this is that we all decide on what is true for us. That for some people doing this

one particular thing might be wrong, but for other people it's not wrong, that we can all sort of
