Today is also the solemnity of the birth of St. John the Baptist.

Before we go into the Third Commandment again today, let's talk about St. John the Baptist, and why is his birth such a big deal? Well, first of all, his birth is one of the few

who was super old and yet miraculously pregnant, and that

0:56.6

Mary had this message delivered to her by an angel. So it was important enough that an angel

1:03.0

brought this message to Mary. St. John the Baptist, he is named John because of a message also delivered to his father by another angel.

dumb, which means that he was unable to speak. So for all of these days,

1:46.9

leading him to the birth of his son, he wasn't able to speak. Finally, the baby was born and they

1:52.8

were going to name the baby. And of course, they thought, well, of course, this long-awaited son,

1:58.1

he has to be named for his father. They were all going to name him Zachariah.

2:03.0

But as an act of faith, Zachariah asked for a tablet and wrote down the words, his name is John.

2:10.5

Because this is what the angel had told him. This was God's command. And through this, this act of faith, his father was able to speak again.

2:20.1

But why is the birth of St. John the Baptist such a big deal? Well, St. John the Baptist is that

2:26.8

final prophet that cleared the path for the nation of Israel to receive the Messiah.

2:40.6

Before Jesus started his public ministry, John the Baptist was out in the Jordan River in the wilderness living like a wild man, eating bugs and wearing the fur of wild animals.
