Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Thursday, June 18th, 2020. This week on the Catholic Sprouts we are digging into the Second Commandment. You shall not take the name of your Lord God in

vain. So far we've talked about how it's not just about

swearing. We learn from that very first encounter that Moses had with God in the top of Mount Sinai in the

burning bush that the very name of God is sacred and that by him telling us his name, we have a much

closer relationship to him.

The name of Jesus was revealed to Mary by an angel.

And we remember that we expect our own names to be respected for people to call us by the right

name and spell them correctly.

And it's because our names symbolize who we are. They represent

who we are to the world. Therefore, they should be respected and God's name respected above all other

names. Yesterday, I introduced you to my favorite prayer, the Jesus prayer, because saying the name of

Jesus is a powerful reality. We're calling on the entire

truth of who God is. God made man. Now today we're going to talk specifically about what this

commandment addresses and the way that I understood it as a kid. I told you at the beginning of the week that when I learned the second commandment,

I thought it was simply saying don't swear.

And of course, that's part of it.

But it's all of these other things we've already talked about.

But we need to go back and talk about what is swearing and what are some casual ways that we can maybe even accidentally swear.

This is the thing about sin, my friends.

There's two ways to sin.

There's making a deliberate choice to do something bad or evil.
